Money laundering and illegal wildlife trade

Illegal wildlife trade is a transnational organized crime that generates substantial sums of money each year, fueling corruption and threatening biodiversity. This report from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) highlights concern over the lack of attention to the financial aspect of illegal wildlife trade and provides recommendations to combat related money laundering. Drawing on previous studies, it proposes best practices for financial investigations, international cooperation, and private sector engagement. While challenges such as the lack of prioritization in financial investigation have been identified, the report suggests measures to enhance detection and combat money laundering associated with illegal wildlife trade.
